Product Ingredients Matter to Your Spa and Salon Clients
Posted by Andrea on Jan 30, 2013 in Blog, Spa and Salon, Spa and Salon Products | 0 commentsAre you a Spa and Salon Owner that makes sure you know all of the product ingredients you use on or sell to your clients?
Today as I watched the news and then Dr. Oz, I was again reminded how just one person can make a difference…15-year-old Sarah Kavanagh.
The story reminded me how I was on a mission about 18 years ago when I was so sick that I could barely get up out of bed. Doctors tested me for Lupus, MS, and Cancer then told me to go home that there was nothing wrong with me…Thank God! Well, that didn’t mean there wasn’t. Long story short, the doctors finally diagnosed me with fibromyalgia! Wow, they gave my chronic headaches and aches and pains a name! I can tell you this, I believed and still do that my “problems” all contributed to the amount of “the pink stuff” (better known as Sweet ‘N Low) that I was putting in my enormous amounts of coffee I drank on a daily basis.
My story goes deeper, but I too sent letters and letters and more letters to the FDA to get them to take notice, but I was not as lucky as Sarah Kavanagh.
Although Sarah is getting PepsiCo to remove Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) from their Gatorade product because of her persistence and the 200,000 petition that was signed, PepsiCo will NOT be removing it from any of their other products.
Hmmmmm, interesting. By taking if out of Gatorade aren’t they admitting they do know that it is or at least can be harmful? Then why not step up and take it out of all of their other products? Well, that is what I would like to know.
Check this out. According to the article dated July 2, 2008 Melanie Neer, Yahoo! Contributor Network
The Dangers of the Additive Brominated Vegetable Oil in Drinks – Do You Know Exactly What is in Your Favorite Beverage?
Now of course, the FDA claims that BVO is used in acceptable levels that would do no harm, however, it has been proven that BVO, when consumed is stored in a person’s fat cells, thus over time can accumulate. With time, if the average person consumes enough of these beverages that contain BVO, you can just bet, its toxic side effects will start to show up. And what are the side effects? Do you really want to know? Yes, they are that bad.
I’ve taken the liberty to include the list of the effects of BVO are from the Natural Thyroid Choices Website This websites primarily discusses about the soda Mountain Dew, but it can pertain to any of the drinks that contain BVO in them.
Abdominal cramps
Anxiety
Anorexia
Blurred vision
Coma
Constricted pupils
Convulsions
Cyanosis (skin blueness)
Diarrhea
Dizziness
Heart beat malfunction
Headache
Weakness
Tremors of the tongue and eyelids
Muscular cramps
Nausea
Respiritory difficulty
Salivation
Slow pulse
Sweating
Tearing
Vomiting (1)
Other possible side effects I found listed in other sources also includes birth defects, growth problems, memory loss and fatigue (2) & (3)
Thank you Melanie!
Here are a few articles I found that are worth taking a moment to read. Then make the decision for yourself.
PepsiCo cuts flame retardant BVO from US Gatorade but not Mountain Dew
A 16-year-old student is claiming victory after PepsiCo announced it will remove emulsifier Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) from Gatorade in the US, but the firm says it will continue to use the patented flame retardant in Mountain Dew.
Also, product ingredients that Dr. Mercola is always investing, BVO was not left out.

So the message here is to take a stand when something is not right because we can all make a difference, even when we think we are only one tiny voice… with the roar of a lion!
As consumers become more and more aware and educated on what is going on and in their bodies, it is always a good time to take a moment to check the product ingredients in your spa and salon.
Be well,
